Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
