The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
