Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
