The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region. "Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated. There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed. The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft. The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019. "This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated. UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said. "I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad." During December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area. The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
